Once Upon a Time I Was a Game Blogger

It’s been over ten years since I set foot at my old blog, Giantsbridge. Once upon a time, in another life and in another place, I used to vomit forth my every sundry thought on games and gaming there. I was working at Warp One Comics and Games in Edmonton at the time. It was at the beginning of a now-long-over marriage, and I wrote the final post there a year after my son was born.

At the time I wanted Giantsbridge (then called Glitterdust because of a roundabout series of obtuse references) to serve as a sort of sounding board for whatever I was thinking about games in general. It was a personal blog that touched on gaming and art and design and travel and a hundred other little things. Sometimes I’d post a bunch of magic items, sometimes it would be a five-day travelogue about going to Gen Con with two girlfriends (for the love of every god I have a name for: do not do this). I wasn’t educated in art at the time, had no real understanding of philosophy or aesthetics, and was very much shooting at the hip. I was prone to hyperbole and nest-shaking and generally kind of a bad host.

And we’re back baybee!!!

I’m just coming off of a month-long design challenge where I wrote a new one-page RPG every day, and now that I’m not doing that I’m finding the newfound freedom kind of daunting. Where before I would just fill that hole in my life with more anime than my body has room for, I now feel the need to create something and discuss art and creation with others. So, here I am, more than a decade later, putting fingers to keyboard and writing a blog post.

What’s the blog going to be about? Mostly games, as is my way. I have a whole-ass podcast about games that I do weekly with Friend Josh, but you can go ahead and ask him - I basically never shut up about games and gaming. It’s also probably going to be about art and discovery and creation and aesthetics and life and love weight loss journeys and adorable cats, but it’s mostly going to be about games and gaming.

While I was working on the 30 Games in 30 Day challenge, I realized that there isn’t really a centralized place for people to talk about games philosophy and TTRPG Theory anymore. And I’m not saying that this blog is going to become that, but it is probably where I’m going to start putting some my more pretentious ideas about how and why role-playing games work. And if we do end up getting a Forge 2.0 going that is more in line with metamodern art philosophy, then I’ll be prepared to submit a whole bunch of pretentious-ass blog posts about it. And I hope you’ll hang out with me once in a while and check out what I have to say about that.
